Twenty, Love Feasts

Twenty

Love Feasts

19 May 1824

Tonight I shall return to the Terrys, having been invited back for their weekly "class meeting."  Reverend Terry explained to us that we could come again each week, provisionally for now.  He said that at some time we could decide to join them permanently, and then rules will apply.

It seems as though these class meetings, in order to attend them, require you to be as righteous as you can be all week.  If you are not righteous, you either do not attend, or you confess your sin and the class decides if you are worthy to attend that night.  The following week you start anew.

Reverend Terry stopped by this afternoon to invite us back and to explain a little more about what they do at their house.  He said that once a month or so, they have a meal together with everyone, called a "Love Feast".  That sounds strange, so much so, that Reverend Terry did not tell us last week that such was what we were partaking of.  He says that he did not want to scare us away.

Tonight is just a regular meeting, starting at six o'clock.  I did not have to think much about whether I would go again, for the opportunity to play on the pianoforte and to sing hymns again is worth the  price of having to listen to the prayers and the teaching, for I suppose that we will sing and pray and study again.  I shall try to contain my laughter.
